Debi (Barking)

Seeking a book club

I'm a 30something old woman who moved back to London a couple of years ago after living abroad for 8 years. I was an avid reader a few years ago and fell back in love with books last year. I have a moderate collection and have set myself a reading challenge to read/re-read all of them. I love book clubs and enjoy discussing the characters, their motives and what I personally took away from it. I read a lot of fiction due to my personal collection but you can find me at the library picking up a classic or two. Bestsellers are a given.

Adam (Dagenham)

Seeking a book club

I'm a forty-something years old English teacher who has only recently gotten back into recreational reading after years of being "too busy". I've been reading consistently for a couple of years, but I don't really have many people to share the experience with. I'm an American, but please don't hold that against me: there's a reason why I moved here 20 years ago. I like reading literary fiction, and I try to dabble in the classics (The Iliad was hard work), but I also enjoy a best-seller now and again. I've learned to enjoy non-fiction books, but it has to be engaging (I'm particularly interested in history, either as non-fiction or historical fiction). I'm open to exploring authors and genres with which I have little experience.

Adam recommends:

Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Maybe not the best book I've ever read, but definitely in the best book I've read in a decade. It's incredibly powerful. Such real and (mostly) likeable characters. Also, I knew nothing about the Nigerian civil war before this, so I feel like I learned some things as well. It was interesting to see how Nigeria coped in the early days of their independence, and it was interesting to learn the lasting effects of European colonialism. But, being a book about war, be prepared for some harrowing and upsetting scenes. I'm not much of a crier, but I cried over this one.

Ausby (Leigh-on-Sea)

Seeking a gaming group

Looking for a new group to play D&D and vibe with after my old one in Belfast, Northern Ireland, disbanded due to life getting in the way and all of us graduating from uni. I've played 5e since 2018 during uni (second degree lol) and fell in love with TTRPGs in general. Bonus points if you like shows like Critical Role and Dimension 20. I'm 30 and a male, and looking or people in and around my age if that helps. Super friendly and can provide pizza for sessions.
