Adam

Seeking a book club

I'm a forty-something years old English teacher who has only recently gotten back into recreational reading after years of being "too busy". I've been reading consistently for a couple of years, but I don't really have many people to share the experience with. I'm an American, but please don't hold that against me: there's a reason why I moved here 20 years ago. I like reading literary fiction, and I try to dabble in the classics (The Iliad was hard work), but I also enjoy a best-seller now and again. I've learned to enjoy non-fiction books, but it has to be engaging (I'm particularly interested in history, either as non-fiction or historical fiction). I'm open to exploring authors and genres with which I have little experience.

Maybe not the best book I've ever read, but definitely in the best book I've read in a decade. It's incredibly powerful. Such real and (mostly) likeable characters. Also, I knew nothing about the Nigerian civil war before this, so I feel like I learned some things as well. It was interesting to see how Nigeria coped in the early days of their independence, and it was interesting to learn the lasting effects of European colonialism. But, being a book about war, be prepared for some harrowing and upsetting scenes. I'm not much of a crier, but I cried over this one.

I have quite an eclectic taste in books, I am currently in my Romantasy Era. I enjoy the classics, Austen, Bronte, Dickens and still love a bit of young adult Romantasy too. I love collecting sprayed edge books but also enjoy reading on my kindle and personalising it with inserts and stickers. Would love to discuss books and recommendations to add to my ever growing TBR.

Seraphina

Seeking a book club

I'm Seraphina and I fell back in love with reading during covid and have wanted to find people around my age who also enjoy reading and like to talk about books without getting weird looks or the usual 'i haven't touched a book since I was 5'. I enjoy reading fictional books in the romance, fantasy, thriller, horror and classic (if they are not just stories doused in racism and hold themes that can translate to today's society and world in some way) genre and I am open to finding out about other types of books and genres.
