Emma (Rickmansworth)

Seeking a book club

I like historical fiction, biography, and anything that comes passionately recommended. I'd like to talk more about books and make some new friends along the way. 51 years old, WD3, and would like to meet up at an evening book event/ club, but not yet found any near me.

Emma recommends:

Educated by Tara Westover
Educated

Awful story of a girl who is trapped and isolated by her family. True story. Ultimately uplifting but not until she has been through a traumatic childhood in rural America where social services don't intervene for fear of insulting religion.

Peter (Radlett)

Seeking a book club

I'm a 70 year old reader, mostly of fiction. My wife is a very keen reader but doesn't much like to talk about them. Most of the book clubs I've come across have been women only, so a mixed group would be great.

Fifi (Harpenden)

Seeking a book club

Hello, I’m interested in starting or joining a local book group. I’m a fan of lit fic, novels set in other cultures / translated novels and magic realism. I’m a voracious reader (or let’s face it, listener of audiobooks) but my nearest and dearest aren’t huge readers so would love to share and discuss books with others. I often pick up the booker shortlist and work my way through it. Recent books I’ve read and enjoyed include The Names by Florence Knapp, The Bee Sting by Paul Murray, Flesh by David Szalay, Prophet Song by Paul Lynch and various books by Elif Shafak.

Ter (Stevenage)

Seeking a book club

Book lover in his early 50's who has just fallen back in love with reading again after struggling with concentration for a few years. Looking to meet new book buddies and maybe help broaden my literary horizons! Would be keen to join a local book club.

Ter recommends:

Anxious People
by Frederik Backman | Learn more and buy
I absolutely loved this book! So easy to read, quirky and most importantly for me the characters were wonderful and so vivid in my mind. Quick and simple synopsis - an incompetent bank robber takes a group of people at a house viewing hostage. It's funny, sad and very touching. I'm not the fastest reader by any stretch but was so hooked I read this in just a couple of days. I've since read a few of the authors books and just love his writing style. The translator must have also done an incredible job!
