Cathy (Torrington)

Seeking a book club

I am retired and have never been an avid reader, but many times I find an obscure or new author or an old classic. Going through Somerset Maughan phase at the moment. I would like to meet people to discuss books and the authors.

Cathy recommends:

The Painted Veil
by Somerset Maughan | Learn more and buy
A completely different era from the one we live in today. Although about a love affair it is also thrilling. Maughan has captured a woman's point of view brilliantly.

I like to read primarily romantic fiction, psychological thrillers and historical fiction but will give most things a try if the plot catches my attention. I am hoping to either join a book group in Crediton or meet up with someone with similar interests in reading.

Woldsgreen (Plymouth)

Seeking a book club

Hi, having recently retired I find myself reading significantly more. Mostly journals and digital news but given the volatile state of the nation over these last 10 years I started to dust down books I read and studied in the 70’s, 80’s. From religious/spiritual concepts of archetypes and Godheads through the continuum to Existentialism and Nihilism. Plus books about individual journeys, both fiction and non fiction, Renaissance and Reformation art and political movements and …. In a nutshell - the human condition. Looking to join a club that is friendly, curious and enjoys intelligent sharing of thoughts and insights. One that explores, not imposes, the warnings and messages in an Orwellian novel. Hope that makes sense.

Woldsgreen recommends:

Sons and Lovers by DH Lawrence
Sons and Lovers
by DH Lawrence | Learn more and buy
It’s a powerful autobiography about love and identity set just before the First World War in a Nottinghamshire pit village. The author’s deep, powerful and often destructive maternal bond both clashes and amplifies his relationship with two women. It also explored concepts of political class, industrialisation, social norms and discovery of self. I first read/discovered this through English Lit O Level at my grammar school in Plymouth.
