Keen to try TTRPG, particularly D&D, but never played, so looking for a group that will welcome a 40+ beginner. Used to be involved in play-by-email RPGs, back in the day, and ran my own PBEM group. Grew up playing historical wargames, mostly naval, all eras, Janes rules, etc. so have no problem with complex rules! Pretty flexible on days of the week. Currently WFH. Available evenings and some afternoons.

I'm an author, and my first novel, 'The Life and Death of Abercrombie Lyle,' is an historical mystery thriller set in fascist Italy with an alternative history twist. My writing is informed by a doctorate in Modern History and a BA in Philosophy, Politics & Economics, both from Oxford University – as well the history of my own family of Irish immigrants to Liverpool in the early 20th century. I've taught history and political thought in several US and UK universities, including UC Berkeley, Boston College, San Francisco State, and St. Mary’s University Twickenham. And I've written several non-fiction works, including 'An Irish Century 1845-1945' and 'Political Thought in Ireland, 1776-1798', published by Oxford University Press. Originally from Liverpool, I now live in Warrington, and I'm looking for book clubs in the Cheshire / Liverpool / Manchester area that would be interested in having a local author join their group for a reading or to talk about their book. Hi, I'm super new to this, I played an intro to dnd one shot recently and absolutely loved it so want to play more. Clearly I have no idea what I'm talking about on this subject but get the feeling that I am leaning towards a slightly looser rules light adventure experiance rather than an over serious rules heavy number crunching maths session. I'm happy to have a go at anything as I have no clue what setting or system would work for me.
