Seeking a book club

Hi, I'm looking for a book club that reads mainly fiction but is open to dipping into other genres from time to time. I tend to enjoy literary fiction β€” recently I've really enjoyed Nell Zink β€” and I also love essays and short stories, particularly writers like Jo Ann Beard and Lucia Berlin. I'm drawn to books with strong voices, sharp observation and a bit of originality. The classics are also important. Hoping to find a group that meets in person in Perth City.

Alex (Perth)

Seeking a book club

I'm a happily retired senior support worker in mental healthcare. I'd enjoy chatting about my personal favourite genres and enjoy hearing about and learning from other people's favourites. I read either historical novels or actual histories, I loved Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall series, or my other , very different, choice is American Crime fiction. Everything from Chandler to contemporary writers.

Alex recommends:

The Last Coyote by Michael Connelly
The Last Coyote
by Michael Connelly | Learn more and buy
A veteran detective investigates the murder of his own mother , killed when he was aged 12. Connelly is consistently a brilliant writer. This novel involves references to the detectives' (involuntary) participation in some counselling sessions. As a trained counsellor I can say it comes closer to the processes of counselling than most fictional efforts.

I love to read to escape from my busy work life of always looking at a screen. I've been struggling to balance my hobbies and social life for a while now so I thought, hey, why not put them together and join a book club. I love new experiences and adore meeting new people.

I have always loved reading - crime fiction, general fiction, classics - and still get through a lot of books. I recently retired and miss the social interaction of work. Would be great to join a book club with a diverse membership.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
A Little Life

It's a relentlessly sad book yet kept me engrossed through its 800+ pages because she writes so well. I was drawn to all the main characters and felt their pain. Although it should be a depressing read, it is at the same time insightful, and full of love, hope and the value of friendship.
Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
Demon Copperhead
by Barbara Kingsolver | Learn more and buy
A story about a boy growing up in the Appalachians in America in challenging circumstances. It is a retelling of David Copperfield. The author deals with the issues facing Demon brilliantly and I couldn't put the book down. Will undoubtedly become a modern classic.
